Impairment Income Benefits (IIBS)

Once the injured employee has been determined to have reached maximum medical improvement, a doctor will perform an examination and declare that the patient has a certain level of impairment, represented by a percentage of whole-person impairment. For example, once the patient has reached a certain level of health and is not fully expected to further improve, then the doctor may say that the patient is 5% or 10% or even 18% or 20% impaired, depending on the injury and how much limitation the patient now has. Then, for each percentage point of impairment, the injured worker will be paid three weeks’ of income benefits as a way to compensate the injured employee for the impairment.
